Measuring Guide

Equipment Needed:

  • Pencil
  • Paper
  • Tape Measure
  • Calculator

Measuring Your Room:

  1. Measure Length & Width: Measure the longest length and width of your room, including alcoves and doorways.
  2. Add Extra for Waste: Add 10cm to both the length and width for waste, seams, and fitting adjustments.
  3. Striped or Patterned Carpets: Stripes run along the roll’s length. For patterned carpets, confirm the pattern repeat with your fitter.   Example: If your room is 5m long and 3m wide, add 10cm, making it 5.10m x 3.10m. If the carpet width starts at 4m, order 5.10m length by 4m width. Enter "5.10" as length and select "4m" in the price calculator.

Measuring Your Stairs:

  1. Stair Length: Measure the tread (horizontal part) and rise (vertical part) of one step. Add both measurements, then multiply by the number of stairs.  Example: For a 15cm tread and 15cm rise, one step measures 30cm. Multiply by 12 stairs: 30cm x 12 = 360cm. Add 10cm for waste, making the total 370cm.
  2. Stair Width: Measure the width of one stair from wall to rail, rounding up, and add 5cm for waste. If all stairs are the same, only measure once.
  3. Additional Areas: Measure landings, doorways, and alcoves. For carpet runners, measure the area to be covered. Choose a runner width that fits your needs.

Fitting Room Carpet:

  1. Carpet Grippers: Install grippers 10mm from the skirting, with pins facing the wall. Exclude doorways, and use a detector to avoid pipes and cables.
  2. Underlay (Optional): If not using underlay, skip this step. Otherwise, cut the underlay to fit up to the grippers and secure seams with carpet tape.
  3. Laying the Carpet: Position the carpet loosely in the room, with 5-7cm extra on each side. Trim the edges by cutting small slits at corners and obstacles.
  4. Securing the Carpet: Use a carpet tucker to press the carpet onto the grippers. Trim excess carpet along the skirting, leaving a 5mm overlap. Use a sharp knife angled at 45 degrees for clean cuts.

Fitting Carpet on Stairs:

Preparation:

Remove old carpet, nails, and staples. Clean the stairs before starting.

  1. Carpet Grippers: Place one gripper on the tread (angled away from the riser) and one on the riser (angled down). Leave a gap of ¾ the carpet thickness.
  2. Underlay: Cut the underlay to fit each tread. Staple it in place, ensuring it meets the grippers without overlapping.
  3. Fitting the Carpet: Start at the bottom step, tacking the carpet to the first riser. Use a knee kicker to stretch the carpet over the tread and into the corner between grippers. Repeat for each step. If there’s a nosing (overhang), tack the carpet under it for a snug fit. Finish at the top step, tacking and trimming excess carpet neatly.
  4. Landing: If carpeting the landing, continue with the same piece. Pull the carpet down over the top step and secure it.
